How to calculate a tip

Enter the bill amount and the tip percentage, and the calculator shows the tip and the new total. To split the check, set the number of people and it divides the total evenly.

The tip is simply the bill multiplied by the percentage: a 18% tip on a $50 bill is $9, for a $59 total. Split three ways, that is about $19.67 each.

How much should you tip?

Tipping customs vary by country. In the United States, 15-20% is standard for restaurant service, with 20% common for good service. In much of Europe a service charge is often included and a small round-up is enough; in some countries tipping is not expected at all.

When in doubt, check whether "service" or a gratuity is already on the bill so you do not tip twice.

Frequently asked questions

What is a standard restaurant tip?
In the US, 15-20% of the pre-tax bill is standard, with 20% for good service. Customs differ elsewhere, so it is worth checking local norms.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Either is acceptable. Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal; tipping on the total is slightly more generous.
How do I split the tip between people?
Set the number of people in the calculator and it divides the final total (bill plus tip) evenly across everyone.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is stored or uploaded.
