Frequently asked questions

Is this legal?
Only unlock PDFs you own or have explicit permission to decrypt. Removing DRM or passwords from third-party content without permission may violate copyright law.
How does it work?
pdf.js decrypts the protected PDF in your browser using your password, then we rebuild a fresh unencrypted PDF with pdf-lib. Nothing is uploaded.
Will text remain selectable?
No. Because we rebuild pages as rasterized JPEGs, selectable text becomes part of an image. For text-searchable output, use a dedicated desktop tool.
What if my password is wrong?
You will see a "Wrong password" error. There is no way to recover a forgotten password - we cannot brute-force it.
What quality is the rebuilt document?
Pages are rendered at 1.5x and embedded as JPEG at 88%, so small print softens a little and an image-light document can end up larger than the original.
Does it also clear printing and copying restrictions?
Yes, as a side effect: the rebuilt file carries no encryption at all. You still need the password that opens the document, because the page has to be rendered before it can be rebuilt.
